Up until the onslaught of cheap natural gas, the Illinois Basin experienced resurgence in interest as utilities sought low cost and dependable coal supplies to fuel the massive amount of new scrubbing taking place in the U.S. They discovered that Illinois Basin coal is a suitable replacement of high cost Appalachian coal. Exporters also found Illinois Basin coal to be an excellent fuel source in the international thermal market.
Prepared as a multi-client consulting study, this investigation is the most comprehensive review available on the Basin’s coal geology, reserves, quality, historic, current and future coal production, coal control/ownership, transportation infrastructure, strip ratios, mine productivity and production costs for all active, idled, and proposed mines. More than 300 mines, reserves and properties have been analyzed. A ten year production forecast by mine has also been prepared. FOB mine, railcar and barge costs have been estimated for all active projects.
Today, a weakening export market and low cost natural gas have created turmoil in the ILB causing production to drop an estimated 40 mmt in two short years. A wave of consolidation has occurred and many companies have shut down mines and reduced staff.
With this report:
- Who are the survivors?
- Why did Murray Energy take control of Foresight Energy?
- Alliance cut back production by 8-9 mmt in 2016. What is their strategy?
Included with the study is a detailed Illinois Basin coal mine database in Excel format and the Illinois Basin Coal Industry Activity Map 2017, which shows the locations of all mines, projects, rail and barge loadouts, as well as existing and proposed power plants.
