As founder of Hanou Energy Consulting, LLC, Mr. Hanou specializes in the strategic, analytical, and market research aspects of the domestic U.S. coal and electric utility industries. Mr. Hanou’s career has spanned more than 35 years, which has provided him with a wide range of experience in all aspects of the coal industry.
Mr. Hanou has served as an expert witness before various state commissions, federal district and state courts. He has made numerous speeches and presentations before various conferences and seminars in the U.S. He has often been quoted in various coal trade publications, Bloomberg and the Wall Street Journal.
Up until 2013, he was a partner in Energy Publishing, Inc., a Knoxville, Tennessee-based publishing company that produces a variety of newsletters and databases for the U.S. and international coal and energy industries.
Prior to forming Hanou Energy Consulting in 2010, he spent 16 years with energy consulting and research firms Hill & Associates, Inc. and Wood Mackenzie. In 2007, Mr. Hanou and his partners sold the company to Wood Mackenzie and he was retained by Wood Mackenzie as a senior research analyst and consultant.
Beginning in1974, he spent 20 years with AMAX Coal Company (now Alpha), a major domestic U.S. coal producer. His positions in exploration, strategic planning, market research, and sales developed a strong understanding of supply and demand fundamentals and provided valuable insights into the practicalities of buying and selling coal in domestic and international markets.
Under the Hill & Associates' years, Mr. Hanou managed and conducted numerous consulting projects, developed and implemented procurement and sales strategies and prepared various coal marketing studies. He was the principle author of the Hill & Associates’ strategic coal supply/demand studies (Powder River Basin, Western Bituminous, Illinois Basin, Ohio, Pittsburgh Seam and Gulf Coast Lignite) and the Short Term U.S. Coal Market Forecast and Stockpile Report.
At Wood Mackenzie, Mr. Hanou’s major responsibilities were to contribute to the process of developing a Wood Mackenzie suite of products in the Coal Sector, including a North American Coal Service, a North American Upstream Coal Service/Suite, and the Energy Database. He also proactively contributed to Wood Mackenzie’s consulting, sales and marketing efforts and trained junior analysts to take over his responsibilities over a three year period.
